Public involvement is the driving force behind the Sumner Parks & Trail Plan. Here is where the public and users can share their ideas, ideas, goals, and objectives for the parks and trail system. There are a number of ways the City aims to engage community members in development of Sumner’s Parks & Trail Plan update. The Forestry & Parks Commission serves as a citizen advisory committee for the plan. The goals and objectives of this plan will also be reviewed by the Planning Commission as part of the comprehensive plan update process. All F&P Commission and Planning Commission meetings are hybrid and are open to the public.
The successful update of Sumner’s Comprehensive Plan depends on listening to the community’s needs and desires. Prior to the start of the outreach campaign, a Public Participation Plan is developed to ensure Sumner’s residents are well informed of the opportunity to participate and provided with the necessary context to provide feedback. Partly due to the pandemic still moving through the general population, public engagement will be held using a variety of custom-built online surveys and interactive map-based interfaces.
A needs assessment survey will begin April 25th through May 25th to understand how residents currently use Sumner’s parks and trail facilities and what they think is lacking within the City’s parks and trail system. This survey will be followed up with an online visioning and mapping workshop in which participants will be asked to describe the community’s needs more specifically and to locate their comments and concerns on a city map.

Background Information
The City of Sumner completed their last Parks & Trail Plan update in 2018. Those efforts established levels of service, included a needs assessment, where areas of Sumner were identified as underserved as well as improvements that could improve current facilities. The Parks & Trail Plan helps guide our efforts on expanding and improving our system. The plan is also a requirement for funding eligibility through the Recreation & Conservation Office. Please take some time to fill out surveys, join the mailing list and stay engaged. Your input is invaluable and helps us create the plan.
