Town Center: Main St & Wood Ave Intersection Improvement
The project to improve the intersection of Main Street and Wood Avenue and replace the aging traffic signal is moving forward. This intersection heralds back to the historic old town Sumner. Now, with street and sidewalk upgrades along Main Street, it is time to update this remaining gap for accessible and safe walking and vehicle use of the intersection. The traditional 3-light green, yellow, red signal needs to be updated to modern equipment that provides better visibility. Sumner High School students and residents frequently cross here to get to local businesses or on their routes to and from school. This busy pedestrian route is in the midst of drivers and passengers making their way to shop downtown or nearby, or to get to the Sumner Train Station. The aim of this project is to integrate an updated intersection into the vibrant Sumner Town Center boundary between Fred Meyer, Sumner High School, residential areas and the Sumner downtown.
The project design features new traffic signal with pedestrian signals upgraded to today's standards, a raised intersection that prioritizes pedestrians over vehicles, back-in angled parking to promote driver visibility and awareness, and vital ADA-compliant sidewalk improvements to improve safety for all users.

Love the new intersection along with the beautiful sidewalks that were really never there. Maybe we can ask the owner of the white pickup truck from the Auto Parts Store not to park on the new sidewalk every day, which forces you to now walk off the sidewalk onto the parking lot to get around the pickup truck. Thank you

Looking closely at the 90% plan sheet posted- is the overhead power still crossing Main street? If so that's disappointing that the city would improve the intersection and fail to not have PSE put their power underground...

I see there are cycle lanes. 100% supportive. Can they be highlighted 75 feet prior to the intersection and at the intersection in Green like other cities?

Not going to lie, that light reminds me of my childhood and am very much going to miss it. I hope it finds a happy new home even if it is in a local restaurant or bar.

I agree with another comment about how the descriptions of options for the intersection do not give us any idea about what we are voting on. Are they tied to the graphic that is already shared? Are you simply asking about what type of decorative elements should be included, or are you asking for technical/functional pieces?
Back in parking is great, and much better than what is available right now. A lot of the design elements that you mention, like ADA compliant sidewalks, increased driver visibility and better signals, are all big improvements, but we need more to chew on if you are asking us to vote on it.

This poll would not suffice in any neighborhood of Seattle. I hope that the people that created it are not the same ones that are making the changes because it is both outdated in language, “snazzy,” and completely vague. “Over the top” and “snazzy” can be anything to anyone and is up for interpretation. What about using words like ”modern”, “futuristic”, and giving us several specific corresponding examples of the design makers’ ideas or previous work to choose between. Or conveying how it will tie in with the new bridge design and the upcoming high school update?
Everyone is more likely to be on the same page and for the poll to really mean something if it were a lot more specific.

I believe back in parking is time consuming and a hazard to other drivers and pedestrians. Hope you find another alternative to provide for the businesses concerned.

I like the idea of fixing the intersection and making it more pedestrian friendly. I'm concerned about how the positioning of the intersection will impact the existing businesses on the South side of the intersection, as they don't appear to have land to offer for the revisions. It seems like most improvements to improve flow and appearance also take parking and access away from the resident businesses, and this is not a great thing.

Love the back-in only parking spots. I feel the 2 grass sections are impractical, I'd rather so those paved and maybe provide space for a bench or 2. Also, please be sure the new design still provides Dairy Freeze with enough space for a few tables outside, such an iconic spot on a nice summer day!

I think the stoplight could benefit from adding a green arrow for people turning left. Sometimes it’s a long Wait when yielding.

Does this this mean the city is going to fix Wood Avenue North of Main Street? It is embarrassing that the city has let it get as bad as it is.

The project was approved as a Documented Categorical Exclusion through a federal NEPA process in July 2020, completing a major project permitting milestone

This project will need to acquire small strips of neighboring properties to make parking and walking safe while supporting vehicles moving through the intersection.
Acquistions and any final Permitting need to be completed before the project can be bid for construction.

This project has gone out to bid, and all bids are due by Tuesday November 15th. Once all bids have been received, the contractor for this project will be selected.

The final stage to bring these improvements is to build them! Once complete there will be contiguous access for pedestrians and cars along Main Street and onto Wood Avenue. Continuity invites people to enjoy the already vibrant community with more ease. Originally unfunded, Council action fully funded construction for 2023!
