Traffic Avenue/SR 410 Interchange

The City has deemed this transportation related project as essential and work will continue to move forward during the stay at home order issued by the governor.


June 1 - June 5

Here's what to expect for upcoming construction activities:

  • Pour Coping Walls W3 and W4 – The Contractor is planning to pour these additional stem walls – No impact to traffic is expected – Exact pour would be at 7:00 AM on Monday
  • Install Water and Sewer casings in approach slab – The crew will be installing water/sewer casings under the approach slab. This work will have no impact to traffic on the project.
  • Install 45 degree bend on sewer and start feeding 10” line– The crew will be installing sewer line on the south side of pier 1. This work will have no impact to traffic on the project.
  • Dig/Install water on Pier 1 – The crew will be installing a water line in pier 1 later next week, no traffic impacts anticipated
  • Drill and Install signal pole bases – Starting Wednesday, the crew will be drilling and installing all seven (7) of the signal poles bases throughout the site. Please note that two of the seven will impact traffic. One is at the NW corner of Traffic Ave/Thompson Street that would require single lane closure of southbound Traffic Ave and narrowing of westbound SR 410/167 on-ramp. The other pole base at the NE corner of Thompson Ave/Traffic would require turnoff lane closure from Thompson north onto Traffic Ave. Traffic control personnel and implements will be in place. The work is planned to be completed as soon as possible and should be wrapped up by Friday, however the lane closure/narrowing may only be needed for one day. This work is planned for day time, and traffic will be able to pass through the site albeit at a slower speed.
  • Thompson Street from Traffic Ave turnoff closures – will still be occasionally utilized as needed for deliveries during the day shift.

THE SOLUTION

Reconfigure two intersections and add travel lanes plus multi-modal lanes across SR 410 to streamline the movement of vehicles, freight, pedestrians and bicycles safely and efficiently while encouraging ridership on Sound Transit and support for South Sound businesses.

Project budget is approximately $17 million.

  • 1- Traffic Avenue SB turning on to WB 410 is currently a tight fit for semi trucks. Has enough clearance been allowed for this to improve? There is a fair amount of trucks but you already know that. 2-The Main St turning left on EB 410 is a short turn lane over the river. Can you work with Puyallup to re-stripe the two way left turn into a longer queue for the left turn traffic? Since it is a bridge the two way left turn lane is useless. 3- Hopefully the project will enhance the lighting for the intersection of Traffic and Thompson for the pedestrians walking to the train station for the benefit of pedestrians and traffic.     Hi Scott,

    1- Yes, this intersection is being reconstructed and will allow for truck turning movements. 

    2- The left turn lane to turn left to get on eastbound SR 410 will be extended as part of the project.

    3- New pedestrian lighting will be installed in both intersections on either side of the bridges and across the new bridge as part of the project.

  • What is the current estimated completion date? The contractor's website says Aug 2020, while the Sumner Connects site says Jan 2021.

  • Will there be a left turn arrow for those trying to access Hwy 167 North from Traffic Ave? There needs to be.

    Yes, there will be a new dedicated left turn lane and green/flashing yellow arrow signal for this turning movement. 

  • In regard to future parking, I suggest allowing commuter parking in the RPZ. I’d be willing to pay $50 per month for a sure spot. Each block could have a handful of slots, leaving the majority of slots to home owners. This no parking at all RPZ is just silly. Also, rentable scooters on the Puyallup and Sumner side would help SOME of us. Since traffic is terrible, it can take me 30 minutes to drive 3 miles, park, and catch my train. Simply intolerable!

  • The arrows for "To Tacoma/Seattle" and "To Bonney Lake" seem to be in the wrong place.

  • Where will sound transit commuters park once the project is complete, since the City of Sumner is no longer allowing them to park on streets near the station?

    Yes, we realize it's getting really, really tough and trying to balance commuter parking (i.e. down Academy Street) with residents needing access during the day and businesses needing parking is no picnic. We're talking to Sound Transit to try to find some other options for commuters. Any suggestions? 

  • We need a Photo-enforced traffic camera on these intersections... trucks are running red lights at full speed... We need an ordinance that prohibits "Intersection blocking"... cars are crowding the intersections and stopping traffic from moving...

    With this project there will be a new layout and traffic signal design at each of the intersections at either end of the Traffic Avenue Bridge. These instances of "intersection blocking" should be solved once the project is complete.

  • Now that a contractor has been selected, when is construction expected to begin?
