  • 2024 Officer of the Year Nominations:

    Matt Wimmer:

Officer Wimmer has taken on many roles since coming to the Sumner Police Department. This past year alone he has taken on the duties of FTO Coordinator, became a Patrol Investigator and has taken the lead on starting our department drone program. He has played a vital role in training and mentoring our new officers and often steps up to cover shifts. Officer Wimmer is a leader in this department and serves selflessly.

I am proud to nominate Matthew Wimmer for Employee of the Year in recognition of his exceptional dedication, reliability, and commitment to supporting our team. Over the past year, Officer Wimmer has repeatedly stepped up to ensure operational readiness, often volunteering to cover shifts and fill critical staffing gaps without hesitation. His dependability and willingness to assist whenever needed have been instrumental in maintaining smooth operations, especially during challenging staffing situations. Beyond his unmatched reliability, Officer Wimmer brings a positive attitude, professionalism, and teamwork to every shift. His ability to adapt to changing circumstances and maintain a high level of performance under pressure exemplifies the values of our department. Colleagues know they can count on him, not only to show up when needed, but to consistently perform with excellence and integrity.

    Geoff Boone:

I am honored to nominate Officer Geoffrey M. Boone for Officer of the Year in recognition of his exceptional service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to our department and community. Throughout the past year, Officer Boone has consistently demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to excellence that sets a standard for others to follow. Officer Boone is known for his proactive approach to policing, frequently going above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens. His keen attention to detail, sound decision-making under pressure, and ability to de-escalate high-stress situations have directly contributed to safer outcomes for both the public and his fellow officers. Beyond his exemplary work in the field, Officer Boone has been a mentor and role model within the department, offering guidance and support to newer officers. His strong work ethic, team-oriented mindset, and willingness to take on additional responsibilities without hesitation make him an invaluable asset to our agency. Whether responding to critical incidents, engaging with community members, or assisting colleagues, Officer Boone embodies the core values of our profession. His performance over the past year reflects not only his personal dedication but also his deep commitment to the mission of our department.

I believe Officer Boone dedicates a lot of time and effort to bettering the department in a variety of different ways.

t is with great pride that I nominate Officer Geoffrey Boone for Officer of the Year. Since lateraling to our department, Officer Boone has distinguished himself as an invaluable asset through his professionalism, work ethic, and dedication to developing the next generation of officers.. Officer Boone brings with him a wealth of experience that exceeds his years. His maturity and deep understanding of police work have quickly earned him the respect of both peers and supervisors alike. He consistently demonstrates a level of competence and leadership that sets the standard within our agency. As a Field Training Officer (FTO), Officer Boone provides comprehensive, high-quality training to new officers. He goes beyond the basics, exposing trainees to a wide range of calls and real-world scenarios to ensure they are well-prepared for the complexities of the job. His trainees consistently report gaining valuable knowledge and confidence under his guidance, which speaks volumes about his ability to teach, mentor, and lead. In addition to his FTO duties, Officer Boone plays a crucial role in departmental training, serving as an instructor for both less-lethal tactics and Taser certification. His instruction is thorough, safety-focused, and grounded in practical application. He ensures that officers not only understand the tools available to them but also know how to use them responsibly and effectively in the field. Officer Boone leads by example. His dedication to excellence, commitment to officer safety and training, and ability to elevate those around him make him a clear choice for this honor. He represents the very best of our department, and I strongly recommend him for Officer of the Year.

    Lucas Devore:

Lucas has gone from one of the police departments rising stars, to an officer that continually stands out in everything he does. In addition to being a reliable/hardworking team member, Lucas routinely goes above and beyond to augment the agency and graciously help others. Whether that means coming in on overtime to cover an open shift or something as simple as offering his assistance with a specific project (or problem), Lucas never hesitates to make it very obvious he wants to be involved. Lucas does all of this while still maintaining a strong passion for the law enforcement work which is best measured via statistics, where he often leads the agency in an array of notable categories (I.E. traffic stops, arrests, DUI's). Near the end of 2024, Lucas was selected to be one of the departments two traffic specialists, a position I fully expect him to accel in moving forward. Lucas's firm grasp on the profession and his keen ability to disseminate as well as adequately document pertinent information accordingly, make him a strong candidate for any future field training officer (FTO) positions that might open up, lending further proof to the overall type of officer he has become.

Devore is great with the public and shows clear empathy for the community. He is quick to get into action and is always available to help out.

    Brandon Anderson:

Brandon is very active in the schools as the SRO and involved in the youth of the community. He assists patrol with calls and listens intently to the radio. He is dedicated to the wellness of the department and people in general. He maintains the DT program and stays up to date on training techniques.

2024 Employee of the Year Nominations:

    Bree Cowdrey:

Bree is an unsung hero in our department. As busy as she is wearing the many hats she wears, she is always willing to put things on hold to lend a helping hand. Bree your efforts do not go unnoticed. You are appreciated.

Bree is always available to answer questions or help out in a variety of different ways.

    Dan Medina:

Dan continues to prove himself as someone capable and willing to take on a multitude of tasks and responsibilities. In addition to his many as duties as one of the agencies records specialists, he has also been an integral part of the police departments guild where for the last nearly several years he has acted in the capacity of secretary. Dan's attention to detail and steadfast devotion to his job, combined with his strong sense of attention to detail, make him an irreplaceable employee of this city worthy of the highest of recognitions.

Medina is a dedicated employee who is always putting his work first. He is also a kind individual who is great with the public and other staff members.

Dan is an integral part of the department. He is not a supervisor but should be. He basically runs the records department and is the go-to person for any questions about records. Dan cares about the people he works with and also is a integral member of the guild board.

am honored to nominate Dan Medina for Employee of the Year. Dan serves as an essential part of our department’s administrative team and consistently goes above and beyond in every aspect of his role. Dan is one of those rare individuals who is always available to assist—no matter how busy he is. His willingness to help others, whether it's answering a quick question or tackling a complex administrative task, reflects a genuine commitment to the success of the department and his colleagues. You can always count on Dan to have a solution or, at the very least, guide you toward one with clarity and professionalism. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dan serves as the Secretary for our Police Guild. In this role, he demonstrates organization, strong communication, and a deep understanding of departmental operations. He provides consistent support to Guild members and helps maintain transparency in union matters—always with fairness and integrity. One of the qualities that truly sets Dan apart is his innovation, a core city value. Dan is constantly looking for ways to improve how we work. Whether it's reworking outdated forms to be more user-friendly, simplifying internal processes, or finding new efficiencies in daily tasks, Dan is always thinking ahead. His ability to see opportunities for improvement and then take initiative to implement them has had a measurable positive impact on both the administrative team and the department as a whole. Dan is also an incredible source of knowledge. Every time I interact with him, I leave the conversation having learned something new. He brings insight, history, and a practical understanding of how and why things work the way they do. That wisdom is something many of us rely on—and appreciate. Dan is more than just an administrative employee—he’s a problem solver, a mentor, and a reliable force behind the scenes who helps keep our department running smoothly. His innovation, dependability, and dedication make him more than deserving of the title Employee of the Year.

    Rodney Allensworth

Nomination #1: I believe Officer Rodney Allensworth is deserving of the Officer of the Year award.  His continued hard work reflects positively upon the department and us all.  He has earned a number of accolades to include commendations as well as the NCIC Hit of the Year award for 2023.  Along with getting to accept his NCIC award from the FBI in person, he was featured in the NCIC newsletter which proudly passed along by WSP ACCESS to all departments in the state.  Officer Allensworth has always been someone I can count on for anything I've asked, and I've always appreciated his willingness to share his opinions in an effort to improve our work and our department. I don't hesitate to give him my full recommendation!

Nomination #2: I would like to nominate Rodney Allensworth for Officer of the Year for 2023.  Rodney is hard-working and cares a lot about his job.   Rodney actively seeks out criminal activity.  For example, in May 2023 he engineered a successful and safe arrest of some juveniles who were wanted for a murder investigation in Lewis County.  Rodney is also quick to assist other officers or other agencies when he perceives they need help.

    Brandon Anderson

I would like to nominate Officer Anderson.    Brandon genuinely cares about his co-workers, people he contacts on the street.  Brandon strives to leave everyone he meets in a better place than when he met them.   He works tirelessly on DT, peer support/wellness and goes out of his way to support the agency and city any way possible.  He has a vast knowledge of things and helps all his co-workers when he is able.

    Jerry Schliesman

I would like to nominate Detective Jerry Schliesman for Officer of the Year. Jerry works hard to get through a large case load (even though he is never at the office). He stepped up to take on the firearms instructor position and is a great resource for additional training.

    2023 Employee of the Year

    Dan Medina

Nomination #1: I would like to nominate Dan Medina as the civilian employee.  Dan works tirelessly helping the entire department, patrol, animal control, investigations and ADMIN with reports, supplies, records requests, fingerprinting etc.   Dan is always trying new things and ideas in attempt to streamline the report process.     He understands his job and works in collaboration with the department and the city to make things happen.

Nomination #2:       As a new Officer to the department, Dan was instrumental in teaching me many of the systems we use on patrol. Dan is an absolute wealth of information and takes the necessary time to answer in depth questions even though he has such a substantial workload. I make it a point to try and ask Dan a question every time I see him because he has consistently been a “one-stop-shop” for all questions I have had.

Additionally, Dan is very innovative. Several times I have had questions for Dan which resulted in a conversation. Dan asks me for input and ideas that I might have to streamline things. Dan is very thorough when reviewing reports and catches a lot of mistakes that officers need. Dan is a pleasure to work with and he is an incredible asset to this department and a great person.
