Stormwater Services

Trees planted in the riparian area along the salmon creek in Sumner.

"Stuck Junction" was the original name of Sumner, as it was at the junction of the Stuck River (now known as the White) and the Puyallup River. River's have been a part of our city's history since the beginning, and the Stormwater Utility aims to benefit these rivers into the future. What exactly is stormwater though? To put it simply, every drop of rain that lands in Sumner either soaks into the ground or runs into a drain. All of those drains connect directly to the river, carrying with it things like oil from a leaky car or pet waste left along the sidewalk.

The Stormwater Utility aims to both keep the water flowing from these drains to the river to avoid flooding but also address the impacts by adding filters to treat the pollution and restoring habitat for the Salmon impacted by it. We can't do it alone though. Small changes can make a big impact - to learn more check out Puget Sound Starts Here or reach out to us.
