WWTF Biosolids Modernization Project

The Wastewater Treatment Facility Biosolids Modernization Project upgrades the existing biosolids process at the City's Wastewater Treatment Facility, which services both the City of Sumner and the City of Bonney Lake. This project will upgrade various equipment that is currently past its useful life, and will replace the equipment with modern solutions to keep the plant running smoothly.

DAFT (Dissolved Air Flotation Tank)

The DAFT removed solids from settle activated sludge, and the thickened sludge is then pumped into the digester. The DAFT that is currently in operation was installed in 1987 and has a very large footprint within the WWTF. This process does not meet current standards, and the newer equipment is able to be operated 24/7 with an increased capacity.

Indirect Heat Sludge Dryer

The Indirect Heat Sludge Dryer dries the cake (which is a 20% Class B solid) from the centrifuge to make a Class A Biosolid (90%+). This product is given away free as the Sumner Grow Biosolid. This dryer was installed in 2005, and has limited automation, requiring it to be monitored 24/7. This equipment is beginning to deteriorate, and the dust produced from the dryer is an environmental hazard.

Polymer Feed System

The polymer feed system was installed in 2005, and needs to be kept in a clean environment. This is currently housed adjacent to the existing dryer, which creates some challenges. Additionally, the bag system exposes staff to dust hazards and lifting injuries.

Waste Gas Burner

The waste gas burner flares the unused gas from the digestion process. The existing infrastructure was installed in 2005, of which is not meeting the current standards for process control or the Puget Sound Air Pollution Control Standards. New equipment will allow us to use more biogas for equipment and reduce energy cost.
